Important - NHS services across the North West are experiencing extremely high demand at the moment – this includes GP practices and the 111 service which are both extremely busy. If you need advice for an every-day illness or injury, please either contact your local pharmacy for help or look at the self-care advice that’s available on-line from the NHS at www.nhs.uk.  If you want to check your symptoms, there is an on-line symptom checker available at 111.nhs.uk, which will re-direct you to a health professional if you need to be seen by someone. If you have persistent symptoms that are not getting better, contact your  practice for advice

Non-NHS Services

The Government’s contract with General Practitioners covers medical services to NHS patients; however, in recent years an increasing number of organisations have been involving General Practitioners in a wide range of non-medical work such as, confirmation that a patient is not fit for jury service etc.

General Practitioners do not have to carry out non-NHS work; however, they will always attempt to assist their patients where necessary.

Examples include the following:

  • Medicals for pre-employment, sports and driving requirements (HGV, PSV etc.)
  • Insurance claim forms
  • Prescriptions for taking medication abroad
  • Private sick notes
  • Vaccination certificates

Time spent completing forms and preparing reports takes the General Practitioner away from the medical care of their patients. Most General Practitioners have a very heavy workload and paperwork takes up an increasing amount of their time especially with complex cases.

The BMA suggests fees may be charged in certain circumstances; however, these are intended for guidance only and as such Practices are not obliged to charge the rates suggested by the BMA. In view of this, fee levels will generally reflect the amount of work and time involved.

We advise that non-NHS work can take up to 4 weeks to complete.

If you have any non-NHS work then please bring the relevant paperwork to the Practice Reception and complete a PMA form. This will then be passed over to the relevant in-house team, a member of the PMA team will contact you to advise of any costs and payment must be made upfront. Once completed you will be contacted and informed that it is ready for collection.

If you have any queries regarding non-NHS work which has exceeded our recommended 4 week timescale then please call the Practice on 0151 522 0099.

The fees charged are based on the British Medical Association (BMA) suggested scales and our reception staff will be happy to advise you about them along with appointment availability.

Please see below for a list of Fees relating to services not covered under the contract, all fees are to be paid before completion of the service you are requesting.
